Happy 27th to my baby brother

Friday Favorite - The fact that I am an older sister to the most amazing little brother.

My baby brother is 27 years old today.

He has grown up so quickly into such a wonderful person. I am so blessed to be his sister and even more blessed that we have chosen to be friends. I feel that I have to state that because I believe that while yes we are family, lots of siblings do not get along and lots of siblings do not consider each other to be friends. I consider my brother to be one of my best friends.

This is BOTH of our favorites - us in Colorado - I am sure I have posted it a zillion times - but it makes me smile every single time I see it.  It makes me think of his nickname for me when we were little because he couldn't say my name - He would call me "Ala"

Life without him would be indescribable - I cannot imagine not having him around and lucky for me, for the first time in YEARS he lives in the same state as I do. I love it.

I'm truly blessed to have such an amazing family.

To my baby brother:

I am so incredibly proud of you. You have always been kind, caring and full of joy (and energy)!  Mom and Dad used to tell me how you missed me when I left for school, or if you were with them running errands, they let you get a piece of candy you would say, "only if Ala gets one too."

As the years flew by, I couldn't wait to get my license and do my own thing - only then did I find out I was allowed to drive ONLY if I also was in charge of getting you to tennis and other activities. I remember when we drove around the 610 loop TRYING to find some tennis place - I think we found after the 2nd lap. I remember all of our vacations - you were my friend, my travel buddy, and you never were that "annoying" little brother. I loved having you around. We would explore everything. I still cannot believe that at 18 and 15 years old our parents let us drive from Texas to Florida. It was FREEDOM. (You drove WAY too fast and I let you drive WAY TOO MUCH of that trip).

The day mom and dad dropped me off at college, I was so incredibly excited. Life was about to begin! The thing I remember as I left the house that morning was the realization that you and I would never live under the same roof again. That saddened me. I tried my hardest to be at every event that would be considered "important" to you in high school. I hope you never felt that I didn't care. I hated hearing about how great you were doing and yet not being there to see it all happen. I LOVED when your tennis team would make state because I knew that meant you would be in Austin and I would see you - even if just for a few hours. Even if it meant watching tennis - my all time favorite sport to watch ;)

I knew when you left for college you would understand why I hardly came home - because I was growing up, seeing the world, meeting people and trying new and exciting things (and partying) - you were the same way.  The fun rivalry between our teams, going to Lincoln and you coming to Austin - all of those memories bring joy to my heart.

After graduation, you came back to Texas. Albeit not Houston - but you weren't THAT far away - you were close enough for a weekend visit!

When you got into Law School - I was so happy for you and yet saddened because that meant you were leaving Texas once again. I know those years were tough and terrible (and good too).  I'm so glad that afterwards you were employed in Texas. I am glad you are home - not in Houston, but close enough!

I am so proud of you. I am proud of your accomplishments, who you are and what you stand for. I am the luckiest person in the world to have such an incredible brother.

I am lucky that you and B seem to laugh together (probably at me most of the time) and seem to have a good relationship forming.

I know there are more memories to be made, more adventure and more exciting times. I cannot wait.

I love you.

Ala

Friday Favorites

So we are headed to Austin this weekend and I am so excited.

Favorites in Austin:

1. THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS-AUSTIN.   Did you have any doubts that this is my number 1?

2.  An old standby and favorite place ever...TRUDYS - because they have Mexican Martinis. The best drink ever.

3.  South Congress. This is where I love to find unique items and I love the "vibe" of the area.

4. Climbing Mount Bonnell - DURING THE DAY. (It is a teenager hangout at night). During the day it has beautiful views of Austin. So gorgeous.

5. Driving down 2222. It is my favorite road.

Lastly though - My favorites in Austin are the people. Mainly my best friend and B's best friend both live there. They and their spouses were the lucky ones - they graduated from UT and got to live in Austin.

Friday Favorites

Since this is my first Friday Favorites since Christmas - I will post my favorite Christmas Presents:

1. My future MIL bought me stationery with my married name on it. I love it. It was the first time I saw my "new" name in print and I thought it was incredibly thoughtful.

2. My parents gave me my SCUBA lesson/certification program. I cannot wait to get certified so that I can dive in Thailand!

3.  My brother got B and I both UT snuggies. It was hilarious. They are burnt orange and tacky and wonderful.

4.  My future MIL also got me a beautiful Clutch that I just love. It is so me and I never would have splurged for it myself.

5. B and I got each other our wedding rings - ok we said we were going to get them, but we have yet to actually go get them - We've tried them on, now we just need to go pay for them!

Did you get any Christmas presents that you just love?!

Friday Favorites

I haven't done a favorites post in a while...so I figured why not now:

1. Clinique Airbrush Concealer.

This stuff is amazing. I actually learned about this stuff from Lisa Eldridge - if you love makeup, her blog is AMAZING.  At only $19.50 I think this is a pretty great product. Let it be known I have pretty flawless skin (not to brag...but I break out into one or two pimples a month) so I use this mostly for under eyes and as a brightener. I don't really wear FULL face makeup all that often. I thank my mom so much for my skin as she has amazing skin. (She has less wrinkles than I do - she has olive skin tone and I WISH I had that!)

2.  Bridier Baubles
Everytime I wear one of the pieces I have bought, I get compliments. I just love their pieces. The price point is a great price point - plus she sells BURNT ORANGE ITEMS.  This Longhorn is very happy.  The burnt orange bubble necklace is my favorite and I wore it to the game two weeks ago and I got so many compliments!

3. Audiobooks
Ok so there isn't a link- but I have a secret...or not so secret secret - I LOVE TO READ. I don't get to as often as I woud like, but I do go to the library and check out the audiobook and hardcover book of the same book. I pop in the audiobook and start "reading" - I make note when the reader says a new chapter and when it is time to read at bedtime, I find my place and start reading. TIP: finish reading an entire chapter, that way you can skip the CD to new tracks as most new chapters start on a fresh track.
I get through books so quickly this way. Plus I don't have to listen to DJs on the radio.
I ALWAYS get a book on tape if I am driving more than an hour anywhere as that means at minimum 2 hours in the car - and a lot of books are 8-10 hours- you can get pretty far into the books!

4.  Tights, Blazers and Cardigans
It is still hot here in Htown, but I like to look like fall - I can throw a blazer on over summer dresses and bring them into fall. Now I just want it to be in the 60s and 70s so I can wear all of my tights! I love some color on my legs - especially since they are PALE PALE PALE

5. Girls night out - especially when it is at Neimans on a Tuesday and you get free stuff. This past Tuesday a girlfriend and I went to a makeup event at Neimans. We got a giftbox FULL of free makeup stuff (which I love and I have started trying out the new products!) and we got free Champagne, small bites, and our makeup done at the Chanel counter - we both got new lipsticks that are out of our comfort zone but in a great way - and then we decided we looked to fabulous to NOT go out - so we did. It was wonderful.

Friday Five Favorites

Things that are my favorites today:

1. SUNSCREEN SPRAY - I live in Texas...I am pale. Hence - this is needed:

2. Lands End tank tops. They are stretchy, cheap and I live in the in the summer. THESE I DO wear to work - usually under a blazer or a cardigan - I live in Texas - if it is blazing hot OUTSIDE...it is generally 65 inside - a sweater is needed.

3. Restoration Hardware "No crack super hand cream" in lemongrass - my hands are always dry. This stuff IS AMAZING.

4. Looking at my ring. I just love looking at it. I love what it represents, what it promises and what it means for our future together - yep I'm a sap. I'm ok with it.

5.  My Dr. Jart BB Cream - this stuff, especially in the summer - does it all for my face - I dont wear it daily (I am blessed with easy skin, but when I need some coverage, it is great!)

Friday Five Favorites

Five things I cannot live without at the moment:

1. My Sam Edelman Gigi sandals (I LIVE in them during the summer and over the past 3 or 4 years I have a small collection of 6 pairs.)  These are my favorite pair:

2. Apple, Goat Cheese and Pecan Pizza.  IT IS SO GOOD.  The recipe is found HERE

3. Easy to wear dresses - I have them from all kinds of stores (Target, Anthro, Lilly Pulitzer, Gap, Banana Republic, Loft).  Dresses, when paired with Gigi sandals are my summer "look" No I do not wear GiGi sandals at work - I do however have a pair in my car to change into after work!

4. Fun lipstick - Guerlain is still my favorite - it is smooth and creamy and I LOVE the packaging.

5. Ok this is NOT a thing. These are people:
The women that I have asked to be my bridesmaids. (I wanted to ask them in person so it will take a little bit, unfortunately one had to be asked not in person as she lives FAR away.) I have one more to ask, tonight when we are at dinner. I am truly lucky to have them in my life and I cannot imagine life without them. They came into my life at varying times and they are ALL incredibly different from each other.

Friday Favorites

B will laugh at this but today's Friday Favorites...

COUPONS

I love coupons. Does anyone else cut coupons like I do? I don't go overboard like the TLC Extreme Coupon people...but I do try to combine my coupons with sales...for example:

CVS was having a sale on makeup. UP to 75% off! Of course I indulged...because that is what I do!
So before sale and without coupons the items would have been a total of $175! With the sale combined with coupons I spent $22. Some items I bought because I thought they would be fun to "play" with - I mean I love playing with eye shadow and other things I stocked up on - hello Revlon black eyeliner that I love. So yeah. I love coupons. More than I should. I am ok with it.

I also love sales...but that is another Friday favorite sometime! :)

Friday Favorites

It's Friday and it is Favorite time again..and these past few weeks haven't been about "things" - something about this time of year that makes me thankful and makes me reflect on life - not the things in it - but who I surround myself with and how loved I feel.

So this Friday Favorite is...

My life.

It truly amazes me how incredibly blessed I am to have my life. Things have dramatically changed in the past almost 2 years. New place to live, new job, new friends, and yet some things have remained constant - great old friends, a wonderful family, amazing Godparents and truly a wonderful relationship with myself.

I look at 2010 and think - wow. What an incredible year. My 27th year started out at S.tephan P.yles restaurant in Dallas. It was magical and to be incredibly honest- a fantastic way to start the year...and since then EVERYTHING has been just as wonderful.

From the many trips
Florida (twice)
Galveston (MANY times)
Big Bend
California (La Jolla!)
DC
Austin
Seattle
to name a few....

To the many celebrations:
Weddings
Birth of Children
Birthdays

To one amazing pup that makes my heart smile...

TO the quiet moments at home - I love my life.

I'm so incredibly lucky to have my life. :) Hope y'all have a wonderful New Years!

FRIDAY FAVORITE:

Letters.

I love getting mail...especially letters from friends. I have saved most of the letters and cards I have been given in my lifetime.

Sometimes, when I am feeling down...I open that box up and read cards, letters and even some email that touched my heart. It just makes me smile.

Friday Favorites

Today's Friday Favorite isn't something you can go buy or anything...today's favorite is...

MY little Brother. He isn't that little anymore and that makes me sad. In fact, he is a second year law student at a very good law school somewhere East of Texas. (Vague I know!)

Throughout the past almost 25 years (geez he's almost 25!) he has been the best brother I could ever ask for. As we were growing up our parents never let us bring friends on trips- that's why we had a brother/sister and so we got along (mostly!) It was fun traveling together - and my parents "cut us loose" a lot. We had to stay together but could meet them back in 2 hours. It was great.

This time of year I get all sentimental because we don't see each other often - ever since I left for College it has been every few months and then stretched further to 3 times a year. It makes me sad but at the same time - I love how we have stayed in touch - email, texting, calling each other. I feel very fortunate that we WANT to see each other and that we WANT to stay in touch. He is coming in town right before my birthday and leaving right after Christmas. I cannot wait to spend quality time with him. B will be with his family and his B (his gf's name also starts with a B!) will be with her family. SO my little brother and I will party on my birthday together, go get sushi together one night, watch a Christmas story and probably lament together that our parents drive us crazy but that we are so lucky...so incredibly lucky to have each other, amazing parents and truly wonderful lives.

Friday Favorites

I know it has been a while, but I am trying to get back on track with my life and my blog. So here we go...

Avene's Cold Cream Lip is my favorite.

I know I have talked about different lipsticks etc, but when it comes to my lips being so chapped they hurt, this is what I turn to. I discovered it for myself when I was 16 and in Paris for the first time with my mom. I love going overseas and venturing into their pharmacies. It was Winter in Paris still (It was March) and my lips were dry so I bought this and my world...or lips I should say, changed. It is THICK and heavy and yes it makes my lips a little less pink but IT SOOTHES. I LOVE IT! Now you can get it in the states...used to not be able to and whenever someone I knew was headed across the pond I would ask them for it!

Friday Favorite- makeup

I love makeup - no lie. So lately I have been using my MAC Carbon (ie black) eye shadow along with the MAC 266 small angle brush to create my eyeliner and I love it. I am pretty good at it and it stays ALL DAY and doesn't smudge....LOVE IT.

Friday Favorites

Sam Edelman Sandals. For the summer time I LIVE in these sandals.

I have them in 3 colors and add a color every summer - 3 summers now. Plus I also bought a pair in cork this year. They are comfortable and better than flip flops when you want to dress down. I love them. Plus in Texas I can pretty much wear them year-round.
